Description

Hi there! Paper Leaf is a digital product agency based in Edmonton, AB that has won awards for our work. We specialize in creating unique custom websites, web applications, and mobile applications. We're currently seeking a “Web Developer, Ongoing Solutions” to join our team. We offer a fun, flexible, and relaxed work environment where everyone's opinions are valued. Our team is close-knit, and we offer diverse, challenging, and creative work opportunities, as well as room for professional growth. We're a remote-first company, and we welcome applicants from all over Canada. However, we prefer candidates who are located near Edmonton, AB or in the MST timezone.

We work on projects for clients across the globe, and you'll be working on a team that values high-quality execution—not one that is hellbent on burning you out and churning out as much work as possible. You can learn more about our work on the Portfolio page, our team on our About page, and get a good vibe of our culture from our Instagram feed. Sometimes mission statements are bogus, but we believe in ours: to improve organizations through the elegant execution of design and technology.

Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility

We believe that diversity in all regards contributes to a broader collective perspective that will consistently improve Paper Leaf and the work we do. We are working hard to increase the diversity of our team wherever we can and we actively encourage everyone to consider becoming a part of it. If you don’t meet one or two of our requirements, but still feel you’d be a good fit, throw your hat in the mix anyway. You miss every shot you don’t take.

We have strong staff involvement in our DEI initiatives, establishing and advocating for progression of Paper Leaf’s processes. These efforts span from establishing equitable hiring practices to ensuring the products we deliver are setting standards for accessibility in our industry.

If you require accommodation measures during any phase of the hiring process, please notify us as soon as possible. All information received in relation to accommodation requests will be kept confidential.

Position Overview

The Web Developer, Ongoing Solutions position is an advanced position and at least 5 years of experience is required. It will involve work like:

  • Operations and maintenance of servers. You’ll work with our DevOps team to keep our servers tip-top.
  • Contribute to our development processes. We are always looking to improve, and as you find things that could work better, we want to hear about them.
  • Work on updates and upgrades to our existing sites and applications.
  • Fixes and troubleshooting for both our current and past projects and products. This could be a Laravel upgrade, or fixing up a WordPress plugin update gone wrong. This could also include contributing to current projects and teams.
  • Small projects and adding new functionality to past projects and products. We are constantly working to keep our clients happy. Sometimes they request work that doesn’t make sense for a full team to work on.
  • Monitor security, performance, and other operational metrics. You will work closely with our DevOps team to make sure our websites, apps, and products are running smoothly.
  • Problem-solving. Most tasks will not be straightforward.
  • Limited client facing work. For some folks, this is a perk. We don’t see this role as being client-facing. You will have to work with the project managers to explain the work.
  • Ability to debug, troubleshoot and identify issues early on.
  • Strong ability to work independently and meet goals and deadlines with minimal direction or guidance. While you’ll be part of one of our teams, a lot of the work will be up to you. There will be support if you need it though.

We realize the technical expectations are a big ask—we don’t expect you to know or have experience in everything right off the bat. Solid debugging skills and a track record of learning are big assets.

The salary range for this position is $80,000 - $90,000 depending on experience and qualifications.

Required Skills

To be considered for the position, here’s what you’ll have:

  • 5+ years of development experience in web technologies. We work in PHP primarily.
  • Server management experience (LEMP stack).
  • Experience with Git.
  • A degree or diploma in a related field is an asset.

If you don’t meet one or two of these requirements, but still feel you’d be a good fit, throw your hat in the mix anyway. This is a new position for us, and we’re willing to be flexible.

Recommended Skills

These are nice to have.

  • Experience with JavaScript. Particularly, with React and React Native.
  • Experience with Bootstrap and other CSS frameworks.
  • Experience with WordPress themes and plugins.
  • Experience with Laravel.

What We Offer

Ideally, this position is full-time and salaried. However, we are open to alternative arrangements. The position is fully remote, though our offices in Edmonton and Calgary are available for in-person working if you prefer. We offer a relaxed & fun working environment; flexible start and end times to your days, and the opportunity for 4-day weeks if you want; a compensation package that includes a competitive salary, benefits, and vacation time; professional development opportunities; and more.

If you require accommodation measures during any phase of the hiring process, please notify us as soon as possible. All information received in relation to accommodation requests will be kept confidential.

We are always looking for the right candidates to help us grow, and will be in contact with those we wish to connect with for an interview. Thanks!
